October is an exciting month.  Halloween Festival is October 20 on Main Street.  We will have a Costume Parade, Games and Activities for the kids,  Red Carpet and Costume Contest with prizes, lots of great restaurants and our special Haunted Garden open when the sun sets (6:30-8:30).

Pumpkin People event will take place for its second year! Start planning your Pumpkin People (one or more)—it can be funny, scary or representative of your business (e.g. a bride and groom in front of a church, a doctor and nurse in front of a medical office) and display it in front of your home, business, school, etc. for the entire month of October. Be creative! We want all our businesses and lots of residents to take part in this fun event which is guaranteed to bring lots of folks into our shopping district.

Beautification is actively recruiting new members who would like to join our committee and help with the planning of our events and projects. We meet approximately 8 evenings a year and always welcome new ideas for making Bay Shore even more beautiful than it is now. Call or email if you would like to help.

A flyer for the hanging basket sponsorship is included with this message. If you have not sponsored a basket(s) please be as generous as you can so that all 350 baskets are completely funded. If you have already contributed to the hanging basket program, a huge thank you for your help in keeping our town so gorgeous!

A Dues Flyer is on the reverse of the basket flyer. Your $20 contribution helps fund our town projects and is very important in keeping our treasury healthy. We are trying to increase our membership, so please send in your check!

The Street Garden Program is underway, and ten gardens around town have been selected for the attractiveness they add to our street fronts. Look for photos of the winning gardens displayed in the library showcase. Winners also receive a copy of the photo. Next year, think about recommending your garden for this honor—it just has to be a garden, small or large, that can be seen from the street. Send your name and address by mail or to our email and identify which part of your property should be considered

Veterans from the Beacon House are again hired to weed and clean our downtown area from June through October. Beautification has funded this program for many years and it is a pleasure to see our streets litter and weed free. Do you remember when it wasn’t???

Also included in this message is a Nominate Your Neighbor form. Do a good deed of encouraging neighbors to continue keeping their homes and yards attractive and well-maintained. Use the form to honor the folks in a home that you admire—all you need is the address, not even the name of the homeowner. You may sign the form or keep the nomination anonymous, and you may send in as many nominations as you wish. We will notify the homeowner with a certificate from the Beautification Society.
