January 2019 Newsletter

Here’s wishing you and your families a wonderfully happy and healthy 2019 filled with all good experiences!  As our New Year begins Beautification is looking forward to continuing our many town projects along with a few new enhancements to our beautiful town.  Another successful Winter Fest and Light the Night ended our 2018 year, thanks to Mary Louise Cohenand Deirdre Wahlberg respectively.  The wreaths and decorations that sparkled on our Main Street for the holidays are tucked away for the winter.  Thanks again to Greg Proce and his men of Sit Back and Relax Landscaping for all their work hanging and then removing the wreaths.  Gratitude is extended also to Gail Farrell, Anne Gerken and Annie Suda for decorating the Reflection Garden and the gazebo with evergreens and lights and for their year-round placing of memorial wreaths on the Blue Star Memorial honoring our veterans. Thanks to Chris Kayserfor decorating the holiday tree at Dr. King’s Park and John Valdini for storage of the extra Light the Night kits. We appreciate all the stores that sold the kits and acknowledge Brightwaters Hardware and Brightwaters Village Deli for selling the greatest number of kits.

Did you know that the Reflection Garden has volunteers who maintain its pristine appearanceall during the year?  We definitely owe a huge thank you to Billy Knapp Landscaping who cuts the grass and does weeding each week and the members of the Bay Shore Garden Club under the leadership of Anne Gerken who keep the garden weed-free and trimmed.

Changes in 2019:  Look for new train station gardens and an increase in hanging baskets from 350 to 400 throughout the town.  Please use the Dues Notice 2019 and Basket Flyer to support our projects!  Our work in town depends on your generosity!

Put the date of Wednesday, June 19 on your calendar for an afternoon of fun and entertain -ment.  The annual Beautification Society Luncheon is being planned by our chairlady, Judy Edelstein, and will celebrate Beautification’s 25th year of serving the community.

On a final note, it is with great sadness that we report the passing of Gwen Cox, a former Bay Shore Kindergarten teacher and long-time Beautification member.  Gwen was a wonderful volunteer for many years, always showing up to work our events whenever possible.  She was in charge of the Nominate Your Neighbor program where residents could send us a home address that was beautifully maintained, and a congratulatory certificate would be mailed to the home owner.  A warm and gentle person, Gwen was loved by many people and will be missed.

A new year, a new beginning!  Come to our Beautification meeting.  We need new membersto keep our ideas flowing on improving our town!  Meeting is Monday, January 28, 7 PM in the Teachers Cafeteria of the BS High School. Use the rear entrance off Third Avenue.
